FAQ - Manitou Rear Forks

What is done during a Swinger Service?

Before any service work is carried out the shock is cleaned & hand dyno'd to check it's operation. It's then stripped & all oil seals/o-rings are removed prior to cleaning the individual parts in a chemical bath. Once cleaned & dried the parts are inspected before fitting a genuine Manitou Seal kit. Then we assemble everything in accordance with the factory/TFT procedures, put oil in the important places & bleed all the air out of the thing. On Air Swingers we pop the air can on with some Float Fluid & pump it up to match your weight/bike. Then we pump up the SPV & set the adjusters, again to match your weight/bike (all settings are noted on the service record). Next we do a leak test for air before popping it on the hand dyno to check all the adjusters do what they're meant to do. Finally we replace the shock bushings (as part of the service cost), install the mounting hardware/reducers, pop a small TF Tuned sticker on it & send it back.

How do I take the spring off my Swinger coil shock?

Firstly, unwind the preload on the spring so that the spring is free. You then need to remove the "C" shaped clip at the thin end of the shock. Once this has been removed you need to check which blue rebound adjuster you have. There are two main types:
  1. 03 Swingers. These have a 2mm allen key bolt down the centre of the knob. This knob is a 2 piece assembly and needs to be separated to remove the spring. To split this you need to hold the rebound knob and unscrew the 2mm allen key bolt inside, the top piece can now be removed to allow the spring past.
  2. 04 Swingers onwards. Although these have an allen key hex (it's part of the knob) these can’t be separated. Instead, you simply screw the rebound fully clockwise so that the spring can pass over it (you may need to twist the spring as you remove it).

I'm having difficulty setting up my Swinger 6-Way where can I get some help?

As all Swinger shocks are made under licence from Progressive Suspension you can use the 5th Element set-up rules in conjunction with your Swinger 6-Way owners manual. The only differences are
  • 5th 'Air Pressure' = Swinger 'SPV Pressure'
  • 5th 'Beginning Stroke' = Swinger 'Low Speed Compression'
  • 5th 'Ending Stroke' = Swinger 'High Speed Compression'
  • 5th 'Position Sensitivity' = Swinger 'Bottoming Resistance'

My Swinger 4/6 Way Coil tends to kick me off some jumps - what can I do?

As you un-weight following big G-outs or off some jumps the rear can have a tendency to kick you forward, usually forcing you to land on your front wheel (can induce brown pants). If you slow up your rebound to counter this you may find that your small bump ride diminishes. We can help by reworking the high & low speed rebound circuits to match your style of riding, giving a smooth, level flight path. We can do this as part of a TFT service or as an upgrade.
